Bomber Weekend history
”Bomber-Boom” started in Finland year 1999, when 13 motorheads and passionated motorcyclists met up at a local gas station. More peole heard about these gatherings and more and more people started to show up. “The Bomber Nights” were born. These Bomber´s met on every months last Friday at that same gas station and caused mayhem at the Helsinki centrum.
By the year 2001 this original 13 Bombers wanted to take a trip. It was announced on the internet as “Bomber Weekend 2001”. The gathering was to be held at Motopark raceway, because it had a track and a camping area. Everything that a Bomber wants from a “roadtrip”. Weekend of speed and fun!
The small internet buzz and “ear-to-ear” –marketing of the event was the only thing that was done to market the event, so the organizators were expecting about 100-200 visitors.
The finnish Bomber´s were a bit surprised to have guests all away from Germany.
After all there were around 500 motorheads at Motopark! Bomber Weekend was born!
The Bomber wanted the event to be even better, so they decided to skip year 2002 and started to organize Bomber Weekend 2003.
The Bomber Weekend 2003 was held at Kemora racetrack. To get the perfekt event Bomber Oy hired the biggest and the best event-organisator in Finland, Elämystaikurit Oy, to organize the weekend of Mayhem. Bomber Weekend 2003 featured the Nordic Stuntriding championship, drag racing, power shoot-out, Bike roadshow, live music and all kinds of activity that intress Bombers! About 2000 people showed up, and the Bomber Weekend was a success! Everybody said that they would come the next year and bring their friends. It was time to think of a bigger venue for Bomber Weekend.
Bomber Weekend 2004 had to be held closer to the major cities. It should have space for thousands of tents and vehicles. With the same co-organisators as in year 2003, Kiikala airfield was chosen to be the arena for Bomber Weekend 2004. It was in the middle of the biggest cities, Helsinki, Tampere and Turku. The program for the weekend was pretty much the same as year before, but with a few additions. Longest Endo and Killer bee-competitions were added to the program. ¼ mile drag Racing was organized by FHRA ry with years of experience. Elämystaikurit Oy created a full size motorstadium with camping facilities on an empty airfield. Both the visitors and competitors were more than satisfied with the event. Bomber Weekend 2004 had about 2400 visitors, so the amount was douled from year 2003.
Year 2004 was such a success that Bomber Weekend 2005 was organized by the same people and also on the Kiikala Airfield. International riders, good promotion in medias, exellent weather and fanatic Bombers created a weekend to remember! Many motorheads all over Europe showed up to spend a weekend with good music, motorcycles and the original bomber attitude!
Bomber Weekend 2006 was again held at Kiikala Airfield. Year 2006 was exceptional in many ways. On the very first day of Bomber Weekend 2006, the World record of simultanious burn-out was broken! 184 bikes took part in the attempt and the smoke was incredible and must have been seen far away! What a way to start the craziest motorcycle festival in the world! The lords of weather were also kind and Bomber Weekend 2006 was blessed with sunshine! The main competition was the Europian stuntriding Championship finals that brought the best of the best in Stuntriding to Finland! The Bomber Weekend 2006 was so big and expensive to produce that the next year was a bit scery! We had created a monster that need more space!
So year 2007 was time to think about the future of Bomber Weekend. It had grown so big, that a venue for this kind of crazy festival was limited. So it was desided to skip year 2007 all together.
On year 2008 Bomber Oy desided to bring Bomber Weekend back to the roots. The event took place at location of the very first Bomber Weekend 2001 at Motopark, Virtasalmi. But everything was a bit bigger than then!
